Earth and Ore Study 9 - Archival print
“Earth and Ore Study #9” depicts the Crowley Lake Columns located on the shoreline of Lake Crowley Reservoir on the upper Owens River in southern Mono County. The rock columns look straight out of a 1970/1980s sci-fi movie. The rising gray stone cylinders have cracks ringing around them at intervals of about 1 foot and have inspired comparisons to Moorish temples. How the columns formed remained a mystery for some time before UC Berkeley scientists connected the dots between ice, fire, erosion, and explosions.
The original painting (pictured in the last image) was made using ink, acrylic, gouache, watercolor, and colored pencil on wood panel.
